Hoeamsa Temple was the largest in the early Joseon dynasty

作为朝鲜前期最大规模地位的桧岩寺，遗留下来的痕迹也伟大

 
A long time ago, there was a huge temple where 3,000 Buddhist monks stayed. Hoeamsa Temple site, where the temple was created during the Goryeo Dynasty, has a large scale even though there is not a temple the anymore. According to Yi Saek’s writing of the early Joseon Dynasty, it was created by Naong, a student of the high priest, Jigong, in India, who said that if the temple was built on this location, Buddhism would flourish. This large temple was built in the second year of King Woowang of the Goryeo Dynasty. It was the largest in Korea during the early Joseon Dynasty. King Taejo Lee Seongkye let Saint Muhak, who was the student of Naong as well as his teacher, stay in this temple. And later, he lived here after turning over the throne to King Taejong.

很久以前，杨州有个曾经一段时期僧侣超过三千名的非常大的寺庙。桧岩寺址是高丽时代建筑的桧岩寺所在地，只剩下寺址的现在也是因为它的规模不禁惊叹。根据朝鲜前期独特的记录，于高丽禑王2年（1376年），印度高僧指空的弟子-懒翁听信“在此处建寺庙，则佛法非常繁盛”之言，开始建筑如此大规模的寺庙，而桧岩寺到朝鲜前期为止，也是全国最大的寺庙。太祖李成桂将懒翁的弟子兼自己老师的无学大师停留在桧岩寺，而给太宗让出王位之后，在此处修道生活。

 
This temple with the high reputation was in a state of decline from King Sejong who enforced anti-Buddhism all over the country. After that, though King Munjong, and Queen Munjeong, who acted as regent, supported Buddhism, but after she died anti-Buddhism was implemented, and Hoeamsa Temple burned down. Currently, Hoeamsa Temple site was designated as the No. 128 historical site to preserve and manage. In addition, it continues to make every effort to restore the cultural and historic value through rigorous research and excavations since the late 1990s.

如此威望的桧岩寺开始衰弱是整个国家实施抑制佛教政策的世宗时期。此后，明宗时摄政的文定王后开始佛教中兴政策，暂时恢复了当时的地位，但文定王后死后再次实施抑制佛教政策，寺庙被烧毁。现在，桧岩寺址被指定为史迹第128号并加以保存·管理，1990年代后期开始通过积极的调查与发掘，正在不断努力恢复文化·历史价值。
