■ Ongjin County Travel Overview

Ongjin County Map

While traveling in the DMZ, there seems to be no travel destination as far away as Ongjin-gun. Its office is located in Incheon Metropolitan City. The county consists of a total of six myeons, Baeknyeongmyeong, Yeonpyeong-myeon, Bukdo-myeon, Deokjeok-myeon, Jawol-myeon, and Yeongheung-myeon and travelers should take ships to visit these myeons except Yeongheung-myeon. Among 6 myeons, I traveled to Yeongheung-myeon, which is connected by a bridge, and to Bukdo-myeon, which has relatively low vehicle ferry fees and short travel time. Since there are many beaches, I would like to introduce travel destinations mainly for beach camping.

■ Yeongheung-myeon (the area connected by a bridge through Daebudo Island)/span>

▶ Sipripo Beach

Travelers should enter Daebudo Island after passing Sihwa Lake to go to Yeongheung-myeon. On weekends, it is better to take your time in consideration of the traffic congestion of the Sihwaho Seawall. You can reach Sipripo beach by passing Daebudo Island and Seonjaedo Island, and crossing Yeongheungdaegyo Bridge. You can fully enjoy the atmosphere of the beach with wave sound and the sands. It is lesser-known than other famous beaches such as Daecheon Beach, so you can enjoy a relatively quiet trip, Beach camping should be well prepared in consideration of low temperature at night.

▶ Yeongheung Bridge

It is a bridge connecting Seonjaedo Island and Yeongheung-myeon, where you can see the wonderful sunrise and night view. Near Yeongheung Bridge, there are several restaurants to try where locals fishers have breakfast and a fish market, which is not open because it is currently under construction.

▶ Yeongheungdo Battlefield Monument

This monument was built to commemorate the successful battle of the soldiers and local defense personnel who participated in the Battle of Incheon. There is a navy retired ship at the entrance of the monument for visitors.

▶ Janggyeong-ri Beach

In Yeongheung-myeon, there are two beaches(Sipripo Beach and Janggyeongri Beach) with camping sites in operation. There are many places on the beach that do not have convenience facilities such as toilets or parking lots. On the west coast, you can experience mudflats at most beaches and catch clams, lilies, and conchs.

■ Bukdo-myeon (Accessible by boat from Sammok Port in Yeongjongdo Island)​

▶ Visitors can visit Shindo Island and Jangbongdo Island by ship (Shindo ↔ Shido ↔ Modo is connected by a bridge)

Route for Sammok Port ↔ Sindo Port ↔ Jangbongdo Port

To go to Bukdo-myeon, you should take a ferry from the Sammok Port Terminal in Yeongjong Island. Ferries run between Sammok Port, Sindo Port, and Jangbongdo Port, and vehicle pilotage is also possible in affordable price(2,000 won/person, 10,000 won/vehicle).

Operating hours and fares at Jangbong Ticket Office

Ships from Sammok to Sindo are operated by several shipping companies, so boarding is available every 30 to 1 hour. From Sindo to Jangbong, a ferry runs every 50 to 70 minutes. However, there are many cases where ships are canceled due to fog, heavy rain or wind, so it is necessary to check before boarding.

It takes 10 minutes from Sammok to Sindo Port and 20 minutes from Sindo to Jangbong Port. If you prepare shrimp crackers(Saewoo-kang/also sold on board), you can feed the seagulls following the boat.
※ Note: Since there are no gas stations in Sindo, Shido, and Modo, it is recommended to refuel from Yeongjongdo before moving. There is one gas station in Jangbongdo, but it is only open until 17:00 and the cost is relatively expensive.

▶ Sugi Beach (located on Shido Island)​

Sugi Beach is located on Shido Island, where you can reach from Sindo Port by car. Since the campsite is not officially open, tent camping and cooking are not possible. It is recommended for those who want to enjoy a quiet trip with fewer people, and for those who want to stay at night, we recommend staying at a pension in front of the beach.

▶ Ong-am Beach (located in Jangbongdo Island)​

Ong-am Beach is a beach near Jangbongdo Port, and there are 2 campsites. Public campsites are scheduled to open during the summer months, while private campsites open from the last week of March until November.

Information: The restaurant runs with the village cooperative. Main dish are prepared with homemade tofu and fresh seafood caught by sailors. Visitors should search for 'Jinchuk Senior Citizen Center' as it is not registered on online navigation system.
