The first gate to face as soon as you cross the Ganghwa Bridge - Ganghwa Gapgot High Ground

A "high ground" refers to a plain part of earth that is distinguished by its higher placement than that of the surrounding land. It also refers to a citadel built in a high position of a fort. Ganghwa Gapgot high ground, where you face as soon as you enter Ganghwa Island, is designated as Historic Site no.306 and is said to be the most important guarding system of the many that take place between the land and the beach. Ganghwa Gapgot high ground is a significant fortress to protect Ganghwa Straits from the aggression of the Mongol after Goryeo moved its capital to Ganghwado Island. During the “Byeonginyangyo” (1866), about 600 French soldiers landed on Gapgot. And during “Jeongmyohoran”, King Injo's family, including himself, took refuge here. The present appearance is a restoration of the old look of it in 1977. The cannon from the Joseon Dynasty displayed in the high ground was used to shoot the Japanese ships at war.

‘墩台’指的是高出平地的平坦空间或者在城内高处平地建立的炮台。跨过江华大桥进入江华岛，最早出现在眼前的是江华甲串墩台，作为史迹第306号，被认为是陆地与江华岛之间海岸的防御设施中特别重要的地方。江华甲串墩台是高丽将城邑迁到江华岛之后，跟蒙古展开的战争中，坚守江华海峡的重要要塞。丙寅洋扰（1866年）当时，六百多名法国军队登陆甲串墩，丁卯胡乱当时包括仁祖在内的王室族人到此避难。现在的面貌是1977年保修、复原旧面貌而成。墩台内展示的大炮是朝鲜时代炮击倭寇船舶的大炮。

There are many things to see in the Gapgot eminence. First, the Gapgot-ri Trifoliate orange tree, Natural Monument No.78, comes into sight. Ganghwa Island is the maximum of the north where orange trees can grow. The reason that the trees were planted was for the purpose of a fence to stop the approach of enemies. Aside the orange tree, there are monuments to commend the generous officials of the Joseon Dynasty, and Jungheung Monument established in order to commemorate the qualities of the very first metal print in the world. There is also the restored site (1976) of Iseopjeong-collapsed by a Ganghwa official (Lee Seong) in 1398. One of the cannons used in late Joseon, the Hong-I cannon is taking place in Gapgot high ground as well.

江华甲串墩台内有各种景色。首先，招人眼球的是作为天然纪念品第78号的甲串里枸橘树。江华岛是枸橘树可以生长的最北侧地区，在江华种下枸橘树是为了在城墙下起到类似铁丝网的作用，以此提防敌人靠近。此外，还有为了纪念朝鲜时代善政的官吏的碑石群，以及世界最早开发金属活字的高丽人的优秀性与科学性而准备的金属活字重兴碑。1398年江华府史李晟竖立的亭子被倒塌，而于1976年重新复原的利涉亭、朝鲜后期朝鲜军队使用的大炮之一的红夷炮也坐落在江华甲串墩台内。
