Offering respect and thanks to souls that sacrificed during the Baengmagoji battle

向白马高地战斗中牺牲的灵魂，表示无与伦比的感谢与尊敬

 
The Baengmagoji battle was in October 1952, located at Daema-ri, Cheorwon-eup, Cheowron-gun. It was a battle of division 9th army forces with 38th Chinese military division to capture unnamed heights. There were 12 battles in just 10 days, and the owner of the height changed 24 times during this time. Battle was so fierce that Chinese fired 55,000 shells, Korean forces fired 220,000 shells. Due to this, the geography of this height was changed. The changed shape looked like a white horse lying down, so it was named, 'Baengmagoji'(white horse height). The victory went to Korean side, however huge sacrifice were made. More than 20,000 people were dead on both sides. Therefore, the 5th army district and civilians made a tomb just for them. However, the 3.6m monument was destroyed by the wind, so they rebuilt a memorial to a height of 22.5m.

白马高地战斗指的是于1952年10月，为了夺回位于铁原郡铁原邑大马里的海拔395米的无名的高地，国军第9师团与中共军第38军3个师团展开的战斗。十天期间共进行12次攻防战，高地主人更改过24次的激战。当时，中共军共发射5万5千发子弹，我方共发射22万发炮弹，如此激烈的战斗连高地的形状都发生变化。而且，发生变化的高地面貌就如白马横卧，所以得到了‘白马高地’之名。战斗虽然以我方胜利结束，但牺牲代价也很惨重。当时，该战斗发生的战死者，双方合计达到2万多名。由此，1985年陆军第5师团与地区住民为了慰劳在白马高地战斗牺牲的灵魂，在眺望白马高地的地方竖立了慰灵碑。
但是，3.6米高的玄武岩慰灵碑因长期的风霜，毁损很严重。所以，铁原郡在1990年大规模整备慰灵碑一带，建设了‘回顾的场所’、‘纪念的场所’、‘约定的场所’等，竖立了高22.5米的纪念塔。

In retrospect chapter of the Armed Forces and the Chinese section of the memorial has been established with incense altar, and exhibit of relics of Kim Jong Oh, who was the commander general of the Baengma(white horse) army. Chapter of the pledge has belfry of freedom constructed with a observatory that awakens the importance of freedom and peace for visitors.

回顾的场所备有追悼国军与中共军战死者的慰灵碑与焚香所，纪念的场所建立了展示统一愿望的战绩碑与当时作为白马部队长官的金钟五将军遗物的纪念馆。约定的场所建立展望台与自由的钟阁，让访问这里的人们感悟自由与和平的珍贵。
